Welcome to the Reading Room, the blog of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library. Through this blog, library staff hopes to engage the broader community in events and initiatives occurring at the Library.

Summer is upon us and we hope that residents will encourage their children to sign up for the library’s Summer Reading Program – Splash: Celebrate Summer! Details can be found on Sprocket’s page of the library web site. There is also a summer reading program for teens. Keeping your children reading over the summer will give them a head start when they return to school in the fall.

Someone recently asked the question, “Do you remember the first book you ever checked out from the library?” I thought about that for awhile and I do not remember my first book. I do remember having read to me the “Noddy” books by Enid Blyton and the “Madeline” books by Ludwig Bemelmans. I also remember a book that I checked out in elementary school, “The Bells on Finland Street” by Lyn Cook, one of the first children’s novels with a distinctively Canadian setting to receive international acclaim. Like Elin, I was enamoured with the idea of learning to figure skate. This I did for many years although I never achieved “the joy of being a bird on silver wings”! I would love to know about the first book you checked out from the library. Leave me a comment.
