Libraries on Facebook!

While WSPL decides whether to join Facebook, and what sort of presence we’d like to have there, we’re taking a look at some other excellent library Facebook profiles…

Knowledge Ontario‘s Facebook page is their official presence on the network (see the Knowledge Ontario Matters group for their advocacy information). If you want to keep up with the organization and their news, this is the place.

We love the way Medicine Hat Public Library interacts with their members through their Facebook page. The collection and events info. is great, too!

Pelham Public Library was an early adopter of Facebook, so they wound up with a personal page that’s quite well developed, as well as a recently started official profile. It’s important to note the differences between the kinds of profiles, such as being “friended” by the personal page rather than “liking” the organization.

New York Public Library posts all sorts of fun things on their Facebook page. They do general interest posts (like one for Dr. Seuss’ birthday), posts about events and exhibitions at the library, and interactive posts, asking members what they’re reading, or what some of their favourite books and movies are.

Facebook is a great way for libraries to keep in touch and have a little (okay, maybe a lot! of) fun with members of their communities. Please let us know if you’d like to see WSPL on Facebook, and what sort of content you’d be interested in!
